An appliance repair service call costs $70 to $130 in 2026
Most appliance repair companies charge one diagnostic fee that covers the visit, finding the fault and the first hour of labor. Large national brands charge $100-$150. Most waive the fee if you approve the repair.
What you get for the fee
| What the fee covers | The trip, diagnosing the fault, and usually the first hour of labor, with a written repair estimate. |
|---|---|
| Is it waived if you repair? | Often, yes. Big-brand services and many independents waive or credit the diagnostic fee when you go ahead with the repair on the same visit. |
| Hourly labor after the fee | $50-$125 per hour. |
| Typical repair totals | $150-$600 for a common repair including the diagnostic and a simple part. Control boards and compressors push totals to $800-$1,400. |
| Second visits | If a part has to be ordered, ask whether the return trip is free. Most companies don't charge a second fee, but some do. |
| Warranty and home warranty plans | A manufacturer's warranty usually covers parts, not the service call. Home warranty plans charge their own flat service fee, commonly $75-$125. |
| Built-in and luxury brands | Expect the top of the range or higher; specialist technicians bill more. |
Why appliance repair companies charge it
Diagnosing an appliance takes a skilled technician 30 to 60 minutes on site, plus the drive, before anyone knows whether the repair is worth doing. The fee covers that time. Because it is so often credited back, the real cost of the diagnosis is close to zero if you repair.

A service call fee has to cover everything that happens before a repair is approved. The calculator adds those costs and then applies your margin.
- Burdened labor rate = wage × (1 + burden%) ÷ billable%. A $32/hr technician with 35% burden who is billable 70% of the day really costs $61.71 per productive hour.
- Travel labor = burdened rate × drive minutes ÷ 60.
- Vehicle cost = round-trip miles × cost per mile. The IRS business rate is 76¢ per mile from July 1, 2026, up from 72.5¢ in the first half of the year.
- Included on-site time = burdened rate × on-site minutes ÷ 60.
- Break-even = travel labor + vehicle cost + on-site time + dispatch cost.
- Fee = break-even ÷ (1 − margin%). Dividing by (1 − margin) gives a true margin on price; multiplying by (1 + margin) would be markup, which is smaller.
Worked example: $32 wage, 35% burden, 70% billable, 45 minutes of driving, 24 miles, 30 minutes on site, $15 dispatch, 30% margin. Break-even is $46.28 + $18.24 + $30.86 + $15.00 = $110.38. Fee = $110.38 ÷ 0.70 = $157.69, which sits inside the normal HVAC range.
Common questions
How much is an appliance repair service call?
$70 to $130 for most independents, $100 to $150 for large national services, in 2026.
What is an appliance diagnostic fee?
The same thing as the service call fee: the charge to come out, find the fault and quote the fix. It is usually waived if you approve the repair.
Is it worth paying a diagnostic fee on an old appliance?
If the appliance is more than 10 years old and the fee is not waived on repair, weigh it against replacement cost. Many technicians will tell you on the phone whether a repair is likely to be worthwhile.
Do I pay again if they have to come back with a part?
Usually not, but confirm before the first visit.
Does a home warranty cover the service call fee?
No. Home warranty plans charge their own service fee per claim, typically $75-$125.
