Free code read vs paid diagnostic
AutoZone, O'Reilly and Advance Auto Parts will plug in a scanner and read the trouble code for free. That tells you the symptom. Code P0420, for example, means the catalytic converter is reading low efficiency. It does not tell you whether the converter has failed, an oxygen sensor is lying, or an exhaust leak is fooling the sensor.
The paid diagnostic is the hour a technician spends proving which one it is. That hour is what stops a $100 sensor problem from becoming a $1,500 converter replacement that didn't fix anything. Pay for the diagnosis, then decide on the repair.
